Is it a bird… is it a plane? No, but the brand new Superman flick ‘Man of Steel’ is finally hitting cinemas Down Under!

And who better to launch the Aussie premiere at the George Street Events Cinema than the film’s superhero himself?!

Henry Cavill, who plays the iconic character, was accompanied by his on-screen father Russell Crowe and the film’s director Zack Synder on the black carpet last night.

Despite the wet weather, hundreds of screaming fans came to see the Brit star, who arrived half an hour early to make sure he had enough time to sign autographs! Aww, as if we couldn’t love him enough already!

Henry looked dashing in a pinstriped suit as he greeted the media and his adoring followers. Sydney Social caught up with the heartthrob to find out what it takes to look so good in (and out) of his skin-tight costume!

“Training! It was a very very long and involved process,” he revealed to SS101.

“I did six weeks of foundation work, then did a couple of weeks mass building. I had to eat 5000 calories a day and use heavy weights.”

It’s not the first time the star has worked alongside Russell either. The two first met when the 49-year-old Hollywood heavyweight was filming his thriller ‘Proof of Life’ back in 2000, and Henry was cast as an extra!

Russell, who plays Superman’s biological dad Jor-El, told us that it’s great to be working with the 29-year-old actor again.

“Henry’s very professional, he has a great work ethic and great discipline, which you have to have in one of these roles,” he gushed.

The blockbuster, which earned over $200m on it’s opening weekend, sees a very different side to Superman.

Director Zack, of 300 and Watchmen fame, explained to us how he tried to achieve this without changing the classical superhero too much.

“I think at its heart we didn’t want to make Superman another character, but we just wanted to make him relatable,” he said.

“We wanted the audience to understand the decisions that he makes and I think that’s the big difference, by just being able to see things through his eyes.”

Walking alongside the big stars was a host of local talent, including ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ judge Timomatic, Bindi Irwin, ‘The Biggest Loser’s’ trainer Michelle Bridges and media personality Keri-Anne Kennerley.
